Learning you need a root canal may feel overwhelming, or even scary, but the truth is that the procedure is far easier and more beneficial than its reputation suggests. Root canal therapy effectively removes infection, alleviates pain and swelling, and preserves your natural tooth, restoring both function and comfort.
At Radiant Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Raynald L. Desameau, DMD, a graduate of ECU School of Dental Medicine, provides expert, patient-focused care to ensure a comfortable experience. With a strong background in biology and chemistry, he combines scientific expertise with a compassionate approach. Patients in Pineville and the greater Charlotte area trust our team to restore their oral health while preserving their natural smile through advanced root canal treatment.
Why Would You Need a Root Canal?
If decay or injury allows bacteria to reach the inner pulp of a tooth, infection can develop, leading to pain and inflammation. A root canal treats the infection at its source, preventing further complications and preserving the natural tooth. This leads to inflammation, pain, and sensitivity.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal:
- Persistent tooth pain or sensitivity to heat and cold
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums
- Discoloration of the affected tooth
- A small bump or abscess on the gums
- Pain when biting or chewing
Unlike minor dental issues that may be resolved with improved oral care, an infected tooth will not heal independently. An untreated infection can spread beyond the affected tooth, damaging surrounding tissues, weakening the jawbone, and increasing the risk of extraction. A root canal eliminates the infection, prevents further damage, and preserves your tooth.
The Benefits of Saving Your Natural Tooth
A common misconception about root canals is that they are painful, but the procedure is virtually painless with modern dental techniques and anesthesia. In fact, a root canal eliminates pain and inflammation caused by infection, making it comparable to a routine dental filling.
Beyond pain relief, a root canal preserves your natural tooth, preventing more serious dental issues. Keeping your tooth intact maintains function, appearance, and overall oral health while preventing the spread of infection. It also helps you avoid extraction, which would require more complex and costly treatments like implants or bridges. Root canal therapy is the best way to restore your tooth and protect your smile.
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
Don’t ignore tooth pain or infection—schedule an appointment at Radiant Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. Our expert team will evaluate your condition and provide the best course of treatment for your needs.
The Root Canal Procedure: Step by Step
- Ensuring Your Comfort:Â Before the procedure begins, we use local anesthesia to numb the treatment area completely, ensuring a pain-free experience.
- Removing the Infection:Â The dentist carefully accesses the inner part of the tooth and removes bacteria, damaged tissues, and infection-causing materials from the pulp chamber and root canals.
- Cleaning and Sealing the Tooth:Â The inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected to eliminate all traces of infection. Once sanitized, it is sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, preventing bacteria from re-entering and causing further issues.
- Restoring the Tooth with a Crown:Â After sealing, the tooth is reinforced with a custom dental crown to restore its strength and function. This protective covering ensures durability, allowing the tooth to function normally while maintaining the health of the surrounding bone and gums.

To start, I’m using my husband’s Google account, so I’m the wifey. I went to Radiant Smiles today and have to admit I was terrified of being there. I usually get devil hygienists who take pleasure in drawing as much blood from my gums as possible as they gripe about me needing to floss. I’ve avoided dentists for over 3 years for fear of vengeful hygienists, but I had a terrible toothache and couldn’t avoid it any more. I went today expecting to need a root canal or at least multiple fillings and chose this practice because they were recommended to me. My impressions were as follows: 1. The practice was clean and precise. Despite the Covid restrictions, things moved like clockwork. 2. The hygienists weren’t out for blood. I genuinely enjoyed my visit, and my hygienist made an effort to avoid my tender tooth while she was working on my teeth. I appreciated that. 3. The dentist himself was HONEST (elaborating below), professional, and prompt. No long waiting in the chair staring at the wall. Turns out my gum was just irritated from some food stuck in the veeeeery back of my tooth that I couldn’t reach. I was prepared and pretty vocal about thinking I would need major work done on my teeth to fix the ache. I’ve always had perfect, healthy teeth, and I was scared about getting a ton of work done but resigned to it. However, I was reassured that my gum was only agitated from the ‘debris’ stuck in the back (a polite way for them to say you have some food in your teeth😂) and a salt water wash for 2-3 days back there should fix it. If not, I can call back to have a paste called in to my pharmacy. I’ve been raked over the coals by dentists before. Luckily I seek second opinions most of the time. A lot of them are, unfortunately, looking for lots of work for lots of money. Honesty is invaluable, and this will be my practice of choice for more regular cleanings in the future. I highly recommend you try them out if you’re looking for a new dentist. The whole experience was positive, and I won’t be dreading my return for a cleaning in six months now!
Fabulous team! Excellent dentist, Dr. D- and dental hygienist Dash and entire staff are very welcoming, kind, professional and do an outstanding job! Thrilled that we found them! Many thanks! Bill & Susan Maroulis
Absolutely wonderful experience! The entire team, from the time you get to the front door were excellent- super hygienic, friendly & the staff was caring. I can’t say enough about how wonderful the dental hygienist Dash was and the dentist, Dr. D, are a 10 plus! 10 stars!
Very friendly and caring staff. Everybody made me and my kids feel at ease, relaxed and informed about the process. They were very patient as we asked questions and tuned in to my daughter's dental anxiety. Wonderful bedside manner from the dentist and hygienists. Highly recommend!!
Great environment once I walked through the doors. I believe I was the last appointment of the day but everyone was still lively and helpful. I was just doing X-rays and cleaning and my hygienist, Dash made sure I wasn’t uncomfortable at any point. Dr. Desameau was very caring and knowledgeable and the whole process was really fast and efficient. My other dentist office would make me wait for so long that I hated going to the dentist.
The staff was very professional and nice! The visit was great! It was quick and educational. I've found a new dentist!
Best dentist in town. Staff are all fantastic too.
I went in to get 10 crowns on my top teeth for cosmetic reasons and they did a perfect job! They made sure everything was correct and took their time to give me the best look I could get! I highly recommend them to anyone!
My recent visit was nothing short of amazing. The staff creates such a warm environment, you’ll almost forget that you’re at a dental office. The ladies at the front desk Zaria and Shannon are very professional. Tonia and Karen made me feel safe and relaxed. And Ms Dash, there’s no words to describe her. She’s simply the best! She took great care of my teeth. I also met Dr. Desameau- very pleasant person. I’m proud to say this is my new Dental home. I’ll be bringing all my family and friends here. If you’re looking for a safe and friendly environment, look no further.
