Learning you need a root canal may feel overwhelming, or even scary, but the truth is that the procedure is far easier and more beneficial than its reputation suggests. Root canal therapy effectively removes infection, alleviates pain and swelling, and preserves your natural tooth, restoring both function and comfort.
At Radiant Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Raynald L. Desameau, DMD, a graduate of ECU School of Dental Medicine, provides expert, patient-focused care to ensure a comfortable experience. With a strong background in biology and chemistry, he combines scientific expertise with a compassionate approach. Patients in Pineville and the greater Charlotte area trust our team to restore their oral health while preserving their natural smile through advanced root canal treatment.
Why Would You Need a Root Canal?
If decay or injury allows bacteria to reach the inner pulp of a tooth, infection can develop, leading to pain and inflammation. A root canal treats the infection at its source, preventing further complications and preserving the natural tooth. This leads to inflammation, pain, and sensitivity.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal:
- Persistent tooth pain or sensitivity to heat and cold
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums
- Discoloration of the affected tooth
- A small bump or abscess on the gums
- Pain when biting or chewing
Unlike minor dental issues that may be resolved with improved oral care, an infected tooth will not heal independently. An untreated infection can spread beyond the affected tooth, damaging surrounding tissues, weakening the jawbone, and increasing the risk of extraction. A root canal eliminates the infection, prevents further damage, and preserves your tooth.
The Benefits of Saving Your Natural Tooth
A common misconception about root canals is that they are painful, but the procedure is virtually painless with modern dental techniques and anesthesia. In fact, a root canal eliminates pain and inflammation caused by infection, making it comparable to a routine dental filling.
Beyond pain relief, a root canal preserves your natural tooth, preventing more serious dental issues. Keeping your tooth intact maintains function, appearance, and overall oral health while preventing the spread of infection. It also helps you avoid extraction, which would require more complex and costly treatments like implants or bridges. Root canal therapy is the best way to restore your tooth and protect your smile.
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
Don’t ignore tooth pain or infection—schedule an appointment at Radiant Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. Our expert team will evaluate your condition and provide the best course of treatment for your needs.
The Root Canal Procedure: Step by Step
- Ensuring Your Comfort: Before the procedure begins, we use local anesthesia to numb the treatment area completely, ensuring a pain-free experience.
- Removing the Infection: The dentist carefully accesses the inner part of the tooth and removes bacteria, damaged tissues, and infection-causing materials from the pulp chamber and root canals.
- Cleaning and Sealing the Tooth: The inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected to eliminate all traces of infection. Once sanitized, it is sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, preventing bacteria from re-entering and causing further issues.
- Restoring the Tooth with a Crown: After sealing, the tooth is reinforced with a custom dental crown to restore its strength and function. This protective covering ensures durability, allowing the tooth to function normally while maintaining the health of the surrounding bone and gums.

I had an exceptional experience at Salisbury Family Dentistry. This was my first visit and it was complete professional and efficient. Everyone was very friendly. I am so glad that I found it.

Great office Great service Great people
Again these guys are the bomb.com From the receptionist to the dentist. I mean everyone including Shannon....lol.....is the best. Can't wait for
The dentist and his assistant were fantastic. The procedure was painless and quick. However, I had a VERY difficult time making an emergency appointment. The employee didn’t seem to understand toothache and pain. She proceeded to tell me that they had NO open emergency appointments. She went on to tell me that they were short of help due to snowy conditions and how they would only be working Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and they are closed on Fridays. She was eluding to me waiting a week to even call back for an appointment. She said IF they had a cancellation that she would call me. I was looking up other dentists when I decided to call her back and let her know that I was skeptical of the information she was giving me. Miraculously, she had a cancellation and I was able to go in. She is not at all friendly and came in the the procedure room to inform me that I would owe $160.00. I said fine. When I checked out it was an $80.00 charge. The dentist need to be aware of her reluctance to help their clients. They need to be aware that she does everything to keep the clients away including quoting the wrong fees.
The staff provided amazing, professional and courteous services. All of the staff that I came in contact with was very polite. Thank you for making my dental visit so pleasant 😁
